Los Bravos suben a Alex Verdugo y optan por Bryan De La Cruz

Los Bravos anunciaron el ascenso del jardinero Alex Verdugo de Triple-A Gwinnett. Su compañero jardinero Bryan De La Cruz fue enviado a Gwinnett como parte del traslado correspondiente.

Verdugo, que cumplirá 29 años el próximo mes, es un veterano con al menos cinco años de servicio en las Grandes Ligas. Esto significa que no puede ser enviado a las menores sin su consentimiento. Sin embargo, aceptó una asignación opcional debido a su prolongada agencia libre. Permaneció sin firmar hasta la segunda quincena de marzo, y finalmente consiguió un contrato de $1.5 millones con Atlanta. Dado que se perdió los entrenamientos de primavera, aceptó ir a las ligas menores por un tiempo, lo que en realidad fue un entrenamiento de primavera retrasado.

Su incapacidad para conseguir un contrato a su gusto al principio de la temporada baja se debió sin duda a su mala temporada de plataforma. Bateó .282/.338/.430 de 2018 a 2023, lo que se tradujo en un wRC+ de 106. Eso significa que solo superó el 6% del promedio de la liga, pero aun así fue una producción decente, especialmente considerando que es un sólido defensor de los jardines. Sin embargo, con los Yankees en 2024, bateó solo .233/.291/.356 para un wRC+ de 83. De hecho, tuvo un desempeño bastante decente hasta finales de mayo, pero bateó solo .219/.274/.315 a partir de junio. Luego añadió 56 apariciones al plato en postemporada con una línea de .208/.309/.313.

Eso le dio poco impulso de cara al invierno, lo que provocó su ya mencionada dificultad para conseguir un contrato. En el caso de Atlanta, probablemente estaban contentos de que siguiera en activo, ya que sus jardines no estaban en su mejor momento al final del año pasado. Ronald Acuña Jr. se rompió el ligamento cruzado anterior y se perdió la segunda mitad, con un regreso previsto para 2025. El club apostó por Jarred Kelenic el año pasado, pero no funcionó, ya que bateó .231/.286/.393. Michael Harris II vio caer su producción por segunda temporada consecutiva tras su actuación como Novato del Año en 2022.

The club made one big splash to upgrade the outfield this winter, signing Jurickson Profar to a three-year, $42MM deal. But just 11 days after they signed Verdugo, it was reported that Profar had been given an 80-game suspension for a positive PED test. Given the close proximity, it’s possible Atlanta knew of Profar’s test at the time of the Verdugo deal, but with the appeal process having not yet run its course.

Since the Verdugo deal, things have broadly gotten worse for the club. They are out to a 5-13 start, with their outfield being one of the key problems. Kelenic is hitting .146/.239/.244 thus far and Harris is at .179/.208/.299. Before getting optioned today, De La Cruz put up a line of .191/.240/.213.

It’s unclear what sort of production Verdugo can provide, but even something like his diminished 2024 offense would be miles ahead of what the club has received from its outfield so far. For what it’s worth, Verdugo hit .207/.303/.448 during his recent optional assignment.

Verdugo, Kelenic and Harris are all lefties, so that’s likely to be the alignment against right-handed pitchers. Even after optioning De La Cruz, the club has a couple of righty-swinging outfielders in Stuart Fairchild and Eli White, giving manager Brian Snitker some ability to navigate around tough southpaws. Ideally, Verdugo can stabilize things somewhat as the club tries to get the season back on track. Acunña will perhaps start a rehab assignment soon and be back with the club in the coming weeks. That will cut into the playing time of someone, likely Kelenic or Verdugo, depending on what happens between now and then.
